My Thoughts On Paid Clinical Trials

Perhaps due to the current economic recession, it seems that more and more people are looking to do anything they can to make extra money. This money is generally not sought after to buy luxury goods, new clothes or goodies, but instead to put food on the table and pay the bills. People are taking any job they can, even if it means significantly lowering their salary just to find a job. Some are even willing to sell blood, plasma and even their hair in order to gain some extra dough. Many other folks are considering becoming participants in paid clinical trials, where they are compensated to try a new medication or medical treatment in exchange for money.

While such trials are necessary in order to move medical research forward, they are not without risks, and so should probably not be done solely for monetary compensation. Medical trials are sometimes a good choice for those that are suffering from a medical conditions, and could benefit from the new medicine and treatments being offered in the trial. These medicines are generally free, and not available to the general public yet. However, as they are still in the testing stage, side effects are generally unknown and therefore the risks are great. With that said, it makes sense to evaluate the true pros and cons of any medical trial before participating, and refuse to join if its only for the cash incentive.
